Kincaid holds strong enmity towards the British and what they turned Antigua into. She starts off her book by victorious that ingrown hostility out on the tourer who does not know the history of Antigua. She starts off by explaining what a tourist looks like to the native. She establishes her authority by speaking in the scrap person to the tourist, which allows her to offend without challenge. She sates that a tourist is [a]n ugly thing, that is what you hack when you become a tourist, an ugly, empty thing, a stupid thing, a piece of rubbish [. . .] (Kincaid 17). By describing the tourist in this flair she is capitalizing on the language of the colonized. Just as they were colonized and ridiculed by the British, she is now putting that ridicule on the tourist. Her anger comes from the fact that the tourist only sees the beauty while she has to function with the harsh facts of the island.
