February 2011 Sexuality and Disability Article Article Summary Sexual development for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are still considered to be taboo. In todays society, it normally is not the parents who are not teaching there students about sexual education tho rather those within the educational system attributing this to a business or a step over the boundary. Due to not addressing this issue, the author notes that the changes in behavior with these students are a indicate result of lack of education about sexual decisions, development about their bodies, their rights, and the risks and consequences of their decisions. Some of the kinds of behaviors that were seen in these students were sexual exploitation, sexual and emotional abuse by either a stranger or trusted caregiver, or being in serious touch for sexual comments or gestures. A survey was distributed amongst the Directors of Special cultivation in 29 towns in the Greater Hartford battlefield regarding the state of their sex developmental needs. Out of eighteen, seventeen came okay stating that they need to adapt a health studies curriculum for their disabled students.

As a result, a program was formed, catered to the needs of students with disabilities, concentrating on sexual health, asserting, relationships and self-esteem.
