A tier is something that comes from outside. But the meaning is something that emerges from within. When a myth reaches ones heart with deep meaning, it takes pick up of them. Once it does so, it remains with us. That is why Tim OBrien told about his experiences and the pile he met through stories. To remember and keep retelling a story it needs to cut right to the core. Vietnam War Novelist Tim OBrien wrote The Things They Carried, which was a collaborationism of the things soldiers carried which included the physical things, like weapons and keepsakes, and the mental things, fear, guilt and block love.  OBrien remembers everything from memory and guilt, to friendship and loss, to action and inaction, and even last and dishonor. Tim OBrien tells each particular war story not just to show people what war consisted of and how brutal it was, simply to allow the reader to feel things from the soldiers worn out, dirty engagement boots.
