The Downfall of the Great Protector of Thebes

Oedipus leaves himself with great pride as the protector of Thebes but ironically this pride will rationality his downfall. He insists on discovering the truth and ignores the aid of Creon or Teiresias, thereby becoming the shame of Thebes instead of its protector. As Teiresias is quick to check down out to Oedipus, "You have your eyes but see non where you are in sin" (Sophocles 1967, 128). Once Oedipus sees his sin, he is shamed and leaves Thebes in shame. He is the ultimate tragic figure of a man who ironic fate overwhelms him and is responsible for his breakdown.

Medea is often personaized as a flinty woman based on her seeming lack of vex for the welfare of her children. Nevertheless, Medea is a tragic figure. Her character is such that she cannot bear the shame of cosmos rejected by her husband. In this, we see that she is a woman of passion that is capable of being attendant as well as violent. It is violence, however, that leads her to assist her husband's ambitions by killing her own brother. Medea is excessively somewhat the victim. In this play she is case-hardened with great disregard by her husband. He abandons her in methodicalness to take up with a junior woman whose connexion to the Royal House will further his ambitions. Medea might be jealous of a younger woman, but she is also justified in her rage at a man for whom she has sacrificed all and who has given her nothing in return but treachery and disrespect.

Her gender is regarded, as the refrain informs us, as one "full of passion and pain" and one responsible for wickedness and sorrow (Euripides 1988, 883). There is little thought to be found for Medea and little pity offered for her by Euripides. Medea is treated like some horrific example of a homicidal mother when those actions when aiding her husband are not seen in this swingy at all. Thus we see that she is a complex character and part of her vengeance is understandable and take down justifiable on one level - she is a woman who is wronged in a world where men have all the power and beat all the decisions. This forces her to go with the vengeful murderous aspects of her character as opposed to the loving and compassionate ones.
