The story is found on the rivalry between the Jets and the Skarks, which are two adolescent street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a white working class group. Tony from the Jets, falls in love with Maria who is the sister of the leader of the Sharks, Bernardo.
