The story is found on the rivalry between the Jets and the Skarks, which are two adolescent street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a white working class group. Tony from the Jets, falls in love with Maria who is the sister of the leader of the Sharks, Bernardo.

The musical has a tragic tone, sophisticated musical style and innovative prolonged dance sequences.



The music has elements of opera, musical, jazz and Latin-American dance music. Somethings Coming, Mara and Tonight are all nearly known songs from West Side Story.
There are a large number of instruments in the orchestra with particularly larger woodwind, validation and percussion sections.
